Friday Night Summer Fun

A month ago I wrote a post I named “Howe Boredom” in which I said I would start a thing called Friday Night Summer Fun.  And I invited you to come join us. This is our first time going to the Utah County Fair!  Should be fun!  You know what would make it even more fun?  If you join us!

Planning to go tomorrow afternoon, too.  Classic Rock bands will be playing.

Tonight we are going to the 3-day Utah County Fair.  Geezerfest Concert.  It began last night with Country Bands.  Today Indie Bands are playing.  Saturday there will be Classic Rock.   Admission  is free and parking is free.   It is at the Spanish Fork Utah County Fairgrounds on Main St.    See the link for details.  https://geezerfest.rocks/event/4661056/599411988/geezerfest-main-stage-top-indie-bands

 Howe Boredom!

Do you have a lot of free time?  Evenings?  Weekends?  We do.  Looking for something to do, or someone to hang out with?  We are.   ..................hmmmm.  I just realized this is beginning to sound like an ad!  LOL!

Well, I decided to do something about this boredom/free time situation.  I am creating a regular activity and I am calling it  Friday Night Summer Fun!  I'm going to make it a thing.  A regular thing.  A tradition, even 😃

Grover and I are kicking off our Friday Night Summer Fun tonight. We are going to Lindon City Center Park tonight to listen to a free concert. Slow Ride is performing. Located at 200 N. State St, Lindon. Performing 7 - 9 p.m.

We are going to find something like this to do every Friday through the Summer.  We would love to have you join us.  Just show up.  Let's get this party started!

I will post on my Facebook page too, so you can text or message me for info about future events.

Howe We Celebrate the 4th!

First off,  fireworks are required.  Snacks.  Games.  Blankets.  A big grassy area.   Rachel's family's tradition is to go to Electric Park in Lehi and watch a grand and glorious display of fireworks.  Luckily, they invite us to join them.

The weather Monday evening was perfect!  The park was full of happy people.  And we were all even happier when the fireworks show started at 10 p.m.!  It far exceeded our expectations.  The finale was spectacular.

I have been to many fireworks shows and you know what? I have never been to one that was left so clean. That was the most surprising thing. There was almost no trash or litter on the grass. Everyone gathered their debris, pop cans, water bottles, trash and took it to the trash cans there or took it with them.  Wasn't that nice!!!

Look at that beautiful face!

Oh Howe I loved Elvis!

I was 10 years old when I first saw Elvis in a Hollywood movie!  He was 19 years old. My best friend, Dorothy, and I were at the neighborhood movie theater seeing our weekly Saturday matinee!

Saturday I had the lovely opportunity of seeing Baz Luhrmann’s production of ELVIS in another         neighborhood movie theater, another Saturday matinee, with my best friend, Grover.

WOW!  The actor, Austin Butler, had an incredible challenge and gave an incredible performance!  Luhrmann's  attention to detail is incredible. Covering 30+ years of an award-winning, record-breaking, talented performer is an enormous enterprise!  Just covering the music alone is something.  Covering all of that emotion, the innocence, the  growing pains, the love,  the tragic fraud perpetrated and contributing to Elvis' suffering... What an amazing achievement!!

If you think you knew Elvis, you will be surprised at what you learn from seeing this movie.  I never understood what contributed to his early death.  People gave the short answer.  Drugs.  Shaking their heads in judgment.

I cried.  And once again I fell in love with Elvis.

My Biggest Pet Peeve - SPEEDTALKING

“Slow down, you move too fast.  You got to make the morning last....”  from “59th Street Bridge Song (Feelin’ Groovy)”

When and why did we ever start talking faster?

I first noticed it about 20 years ago when advertisers were doing those medication commercials and needed to tell us all the dangerous side effects we might experience.  Do you remember?  They ran them at high speed.  A necessary evil.

Speed it up; saving air time equals lower production costs.

More recently I observed that on Audible and other storytelling websites, the listener has the option of speeding up or slowing down the words.   I wish we could do that with telephone calls. Especially robot messaging, reminders, and voicemails.

Technology may make leaving a message easier, however it does not make it more intelligible.

Why is this my biggest pet peeve, you might ask? Why do I even care?

Well, I have the unique opportunity of captioning calls for people with some degree of hearing loss.  I have been doing this, working as a Captioning Agent for about 3 ½ years now.  Even though I work part-time, I estimate I have answered approximately 50,000 calls.

I am always amazed that people who call with knowledge of the age or medical challenges of the individuals they are calling don’t take more time to connect and slowly explain the reasons for their calls.  When answering the phone it often takes a beat for someone just to hear or discover who is calling, let alone why.  That means pharmacies, medical offices.

And,

I worked in an office for a large part of my life as a Secretary, Receptionist, Manager, Desk Clerk, in Personnel and HR.  Lots of telephone work. Close to 25 years.  Wouldn’t it be more efficient  and less frustrating for all of us (with and without hearing loss) to speak to a human who we can understand and with whom we can connect?

To those of you who are already doing a great job of this, BRAVO!  You are already helping to make the lives of those you call (and mine) better.  I hear you.

HoweItGoes-Resurrected

Somehowe... I lost track of my blog.  I forgot to blog.  I forgot the name of the blog.  I almost forgot I ever had a blog.  Until..  I began thinking about blogging.  And wondered if my old blog still existed.  Then I went looking, and looking, and looking.

And HOORAY!  I found it.  154 blog posts!  I'm glad to revisit my life in my blog posts from 2008-2015.

I kept pretty busy for being out in the boondocks of  WYOMING.  I learned a lot.  I made some very good friends.  It was their friendship that kept me afloat.  That, and the visits from my children.  I don't think I would otherwise have survived the "ordeal."  I like that word.  I think I am going to use it now whenever I reference WYOMING.

So..... In the 7 years I was dead silent, what in the world was I thinking, doing? Well the sad truth is:

In, and during most of, 2015 we tried to move to California.  No such luck. In the course of being sued, I did make a new friend, Dawn, who I love! In 2016 I got a job at the Lovell Library. Grover got dentures in Mexico.  I dealt with difficult personal and family issues. In 2017 I was fired from the Lovell Library and Grover suffered a heart attack, and fortunately, survived. In 2018, thankfully, we moved to Utah.  Shortly thereafter Grover suffered a stroke, and, fortunately, survived. The last 3 years have been focused on recovery and medical issues, the pandemic, etc.

No wonder I haven't been writing!!! They say "misery loves company" but I disagree. It's too depressing and don't we have enough of that?

So, a brief update.  I got a job as a captioning agent for a company called Caption Call.  I started working from home in April of 2020. So, stuck at home and with more free time, I started to learn about art.  I began with oil painting.  While working I was able to do a lot of  zentangles. Next I played with doing mixed media and altered books.  And now I am trying  watercolor art.

I am beginning to enjoy trying new and different creative activities.

And I miss writing.

So,  I am back from the dead!!!

I hope you will join me and enjoy and comment and share your life with me again.

Howe about it?  👀

Summer Fun in 2015

We were so lucky to have company last summer.  Will and Fallon came to stay for 2 weeks.  Rachel and family came as well.  Here they are at Aunt Grace's house playing outdoors.
